Key Features of DipTrace
- DipTrace is advanced electronic PCB design software.
- The program features an integrated Schematic Capture, shape-based autorouter, 3D viewer/STEP exporter, supports high-speed and differential signaling, and provides Component and Pattern Editors for designing new component libraries and footprints.
- DipTrace has a very intuitive user interface and high flexibility.
- The output formats: DXF, Gerber, Gerber X2, ODB++, N/C Drill, and G-code.
How to design your first PCB with DipTrace
DipTrace provides an intuitive, professional-grade EDA/CAD environment for creating schematic diagrams and routing printed circuit boards. Follow these core steps to take your project from concept to manufacturing:
-
Create Your SchematicLaunch the Schematic Capture module. Use the component library to find your parts, place them on the grid, and connect the pins using the wiring tools to build your logical circuit.
-
Convert to PCB LayoutOnce your schematic is error-free, click File > Convert to PCB. This will open the PCB Layout module, automatically importing your component footprints and logical connections (ratlines).
-
Position and Route TracesArrange your components within the board outline. You can manually draw copper traces to connect the pads, or use DipTrace's built-in Shape-Based Auto-Router to instantly map out complex connection paths.
-
Preview in 3D and ExportClick the 3D Preview button to inspect a realistic render of your finished board. When you are ready to manufacture, export your design as standard Gerber RS-274X and NC Drill files to send to any PCB fabrication house.
Pro Tip: Can't find a specific part in the standard libraries? Use the included Component Editor and Pattern Editor modules to quickly draw custom symbols and physical footprints for rare or new components!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! DipTrace offers a generous Freeware version strictly for non-profit, hobbyist, or student use. It is fully functional but contains a limitation of 300 pins and 2 signal layers, which is plenty of room for most beginner and intermediate projects.
DipTrace is natively built for Windows. However, it is fully supported on macOS via a provided customized installation package (which utilizes Wine). Linux users can also run DipTrace smoothly using Wine or CrossOver software.
No. Unlike some EDA software that charges for add-on modules, DipTrace includes the advanced Shape-Based Auto-Router, the 3D PCB Previewer, and access to over 11,000 3D models in all versions of the software—including the free edition.
Yes. DipTrace features highly compatible import capabilities. You can easily migrate your existing schematics, PCB layouts, and component libraries from Eagle, Altium Designer, KiCad, OrCAD, and PADS directly into the DipTrace environment.
