The Tapwave Zodiac is a PalmOS Organizer (or PDA) which was in production during 2004 and 2005. Besides having a design that resembles the classic SuperNintendo controller, it was famous for it’s unique approach on using PalmOS as a basis for a GameBoy-like device. When most PalmOS PDAs had around one to four megabytes of Heap (the rough equivalent to RAM on you PC) the Zodiac was a developer’s dream come true with around 11 megabytes of Heap and, depending on the configuration, up to 128 megabytes of storage memory.
Another highlight was the integrated ATI graphics accelerator with 8MB of dedicated RAM. Sadly, even though the Zodiac was very popular in the PalmOS scene, it failed in the mainstream gaming market, probably due to Tapwave’s inability to license a larger number of high-quality games. In 2005, the Zodiac had to be pulled and Tapwave filed for bankruptcy, but applications are still being ported and developed for this platform, including MAME, LJP (A multi emulator for SuperNES, NES, Megadrive and a whole lot more), Doom, Quake, Hexen, Hexen2, Heretic and Duke Nukem.
